Groundbreaking Ceremony of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project (Phase-1)

Today, date 14th March 2015, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel performed the Groundbreaking ceremony of Phase-1 of the ambitious Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project at Vastral in Ahmedabad.

In October last year, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government had approved a grant of Rs. 10,773 crore for phase-1 of the metro rail project in the city.

The first phase, covers 37.76 km.

Project has 2 different corridors:
1. East-West Corridor from Vastral to Thaltej
2. North-South corridor from APMC to Motera.

Both proposed corridors are expected to provide much needed connectivity, and pass through dense and traffic congested areas of Ahmedabad to reduce traffic congestion. Future forecast of population projects population here as 1.1 crore for 2043, with about 70% residing in the Ahmedabad Metropolitan Corporation (AMC) area. Bus transport will not be able to cater to increased public transit load, and make a shift to private transport modes as is evident at present through high vehicle ownership trend in the region. To combat aggravated congestion streets and increased pollution, a Metro Rail System in Ahmedabad is very much essential.

The Gujarat government would bear Rs. 2,000 crore out of the total expenditure of Rs. 10,773 crore for the first phase, while the central government will bear Rs. 2,000 crore on a 50:50 ratio basis.

The project would be implemented by Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) Company Ltd.

The metro rail will be linked with BRTS, railway and other public transport services through which a multi-model transport service would be developed.
